- Douglas Rain, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968. Booked for the voice of the HAL computer, Davenport was actually on the Elstree set feeding lines to astronauts Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood – until director Stanley Kubrick decided the English accent “too distracting.” For the rest of the shoot, the movie astronauts had to put up with a Cockney assistant director… “Better tyke a stress pill, Dyve.” Rain recorded his lines in Canada and has still never met Dave: Keir Dullea. The great French star, Jean-Louis Trintignant, was HAL in the French lingo dub; he also voiced The Shining’s Jack Nicholson. In the weak sequel, 2010, 1984, the computer SAL 9000 was voiced by… Candice Bergen. But then HAL was first due to be ATHENA.
