Italian director Luchino Visconti chose Asti for Natlaia. “She had no acting experience, but was very pretty,” recalled scenarist Suso Cecchi d’Amico. “Then, he left us to go to the Venice festival (he was on the jury). And he started to call us, enthusiastic about Maria Schell, who had just obtained the Best Actress award. I thought she was expensive and too sugary, but why not? Partly because of her, the film ceased to be neorealistic to become a fantasy.”
