1. – Elen Safonova, L’accompagnatrice, France, 1992. Anita was highly, er, derivative of Giuletta Masina, whereas the Russian girl with the Dark Eyes was simply resplendent.
2. – Sandrine Bonnaire, La Cérémonie, France-Germany, 1995. Grunberg was just not keen on playing the role “now.” Claude Chabrol couldn’t wait and Bonnaire made a magic partnership with Isabelle Huppert in what Chabrol called a Marxist film about class struggle. To everyone else, it was a great (Freudian) thriller.
