Carol Haney

  1. Cyd Charisse, Singin’ In The Rain, l952.     After her Pajama Game triumph on-stage and screen, Carol was soon choreographing with Gene Kelly. She  created the  gangster’s moll in the Broadway Melody routine for herself opposite Kelly. “But [producer] Arthur Freed did not care for her in that role,” recalled Cyd. “He telephoned me: Would you like to dance with Gene Kelly?  That’s how it came about.  Carol was the most charming, wonderful girl. Here she missed out on this wonderful part and yet she was more than  happy to help me as much as she could.”
  2. Shirley MacLaine, The Trouble With Harry, l955.     A Hal Wallis rep (and not Hitchcock as  the legend has it) went to see Carol in  Pajama  Game on Broadway, 1954. She had torn her ankle ligaments. Shirley understudied. Et voila…!
  3. Mitzi Gaynor, Les Girls, 1956.     Original line-up for Gene Kelly’s classy MGMovie finale was Leslie Caron, Carol Haney and Cyd Charisse. They became: Mitzi Gaynor, Kay Kendall and Taina Elg. Jean Simmons was also up for the Kendall’s kiss-and-tell writer, Lady Sybil Wren.
