- Anna Magnani, Roma città aperta (Rome, Open City), Italy, 1945. Italian maestro Luchino Visconti was annoyed… It was bad enough that his rival, Roberto Rosselini, had ripped off Ossessione with Desiderio. Now he was stealing Visconti’s leading lady, as well! However, Calmai did not gell with Rossellini and quit. He then called up Magnani – who had, in fact, been Visconti’s first Ossessione choice but passed the role to Calamai due to pregnancy. The (in)famous Calamai had created a scandal in 1941 by baring her breasts during 18 frames of Alessandro Blasetti’s La cena delle beffe (The Jester’s Supper). Not quite the first for Italian cinema as many reports say. Vittoria Carpi flashed just one breast the year before in Blasetti’s La corono di ferro (The Iron Crown).
