Myra Frances, Doctor Who #106: The Creature From The Pit, TV, 1979. The ex-Mrs Peter O’Toole declined Lady Adrasta and Doc4 Tom Baker’s Paris tale of an alien out to steal the Mona Lisa… for, er, time travel reasons. (Honest!) When the O’Tooles worked together, he never rehearsed with her and would often belittle her career. Charming! Not wonder their 20-years-andf-two-daughters-marriage ended in this year.
Adrienne Corri, Doctor Who #109: The Leisure Hive, TV, 1980. Now she passed on Mena in Tom Baker’s Season 18 opener – in Edwardian Brighton, this time, plus the leisure planet Argolis. Well, she won much better women… Queen Boudicca, Caligula’s granny, Clementine Churchill, Mrs George Smiley, Madame de Volanges, the Duchess of Windsor and Vanity Fair’s Miss Matilda Crawley. You can never go wrong, as I always say, with a Crawley. So few of us around…
Joan Sims, Doctor Who #143: The Trial of a Time Lord, TV, 1986. When Joan Sims is competing with Sylvia Syms… not to mention Ingrid Pitt, Beryl Reid versus Honor Blackman, Billie Whitelaw… you realise a certain desperation has entered the casting process. Indeed, never had so many women – 20 – been flagpoled for one part… The other Katryca contenders were Linda Baron, Jill Bennett, Isla Blair, Brenda Bruce, Adrienne Corri, Sheila Hancock, Janet Henfrey, Rosemary Leach, Jean Marsh, Sian Phillips (never Whoved in 106 screen roles), , Dinah Sheridan, Elizabeth Spriggs, Wanda Ventham (the mother of Benedict Cumberbatch) and Fiona Walker. The winner was, inexplicably, Sims. She didn’t enjoy it one bit. So she did not… carry on.

Game over! Recently, we’ve seen Marlon Brando leading Jack Nicholson by one or two movies he chose not to make – and then, almost immediately, vice-versa. The gap is much wider now. We’ve found two more titles for Jack – Wall Street, Scent of a Woman - and just one extra for Marlon (The Killer Inside Me). Result: Jack now tops the league with 179 films compared to Brando’s 173. A BOND MISS

It’s more doubtful that the next Bond will be Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Not because his name is longer than any 007 title. But from August (and instead of Adam Driver, Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeve or John David Washington,) he has his own Marvel to nuture,. Kraven the Hunter – fifth film in the Spideyverse. (Aaron was an Amazing Spider-Man contender in 2010). He’s also into the WWII bomb heist, Fuze, and joins M-that-was, Ralph Fiennes, in the 28 Years Later chapter from Danny Boyle – who, of course, directed Daniel Craig and his ultimate Bond Girl, The Queen, for the 2012 London Olympics.
