As for the bastards mispelling, QT said “I’m never going to explain that” before admitting “That’s just the way you say it: Basterds.”  The first role aimed at  Brühl was an Austrian-born US Jew in Lieutenant Brad Pitt’s Nazi-killing squad, Corporal Wilhelm Wicki (named after German director Bernhard Wicki),
  2. August Diehl, Inglorious Basterds, 2008.  …the second was Sturmbannführer  Dieter Hellstrom before Daniel  became  Pfc 
    Fredrick Zoller, a German Audie Murphy sniper-hero, , playing his WWII exploits in the film  within the film, Stolz der Nation,

     (Nation’s Pride), directed by Eli Roth, inbetween  playing Sergeant Donny “The Bear Jew”  – father of  film producer Lee Donowitz (Saul Rubinek) in QT’s 1992 True Romance script! Reviews were mixed. From Roger Ebert’s rave -“a big, bold, audacious war movie that will annoy some, startle others” to e Christopher Hitchens comparing it to”sittingin the dark having a great pot of warm piss emptied very slowly over your head.”

  3. Lars Eidinger, Sils Maria, France-US, 2013.    Change of Klaus Diesterweg in the Olivier Assayas film because Bruhl was off promo-ing his role of  Formula One ace Niki Lauda in Rush.
