- Eric Linden, Ah, Wilderness! 1934. At one point, MGM asked Cook to repeat his role of Richard in Eugene O’Neill’s Broadway play. Director Clarence Brown then preferred the 19-year-old New Yorker, Junior Dorkin – and when he was killed in a car smash (his intended screen father, Will Rogers, died three months later – in a plane crash), the Swedish-American Linden won the bst role of his 33 crediuts. He was no match for Cook – one of the greatest unsung Hollywood character guys in some 218 screen roles (lots of gunsels and weasels) during 1930-1988.
