1. – Lew Ayres, All Quiet on the Western Front, 1930. Although not an actor, the book’s author was among the front runners to portray his universal soldier in, probably, the finest anti-war story. He did take a small role the 1958 film of his noves, A Time To Love And A Time To Die. Remarque has another filmworld connection – he wed Paulette Goddard, 1958-70.
