- Kathleen Burke, Island of Lost Souls, 1931. Naturally, Paramount organised a contest to find … The Panther Woman! Because despite Charles Laughton as Dr Moreau (oh, that island!) – opposite Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams and Bela Lugosi – Lota, The Panther Woman stole all, lock, stock and poster. Burke beat off producer-actress Gail Patrick, Lona Andre and Verna Hillie to the rôle. Patrick and Burke became good friends with then future Perry Mason producer (1957-1966) was glad she lost the rôle when seeing Burke failing to won another movie because she was so identified with Dr Moreau’s Panther Woman.
- Binnie Barnes, Up In Mabel’s Room, 1943. First set for Alicia, Patrick was promoted to the rirular Mabel when Joan Bennett left in a huff (or a taxi) due to her low billing Patrick stole the whackiness!
