1. – Eva Marie Saint, Grand Prix, 1966 Asked for ideas, Yves Montand and his wife Simone Signoret suggested that director John Frankenheimer choose the Swedish, that is to say Bergman star. However, another US director Sidney Lumet, had asked Harriet to replace Candice Bergen as the unfaithful wife of James Mason (basically, John Le Carre’s George Smiley) in The Deadly Affair… also with Signoret. (This was Harriet’s only English-language film; her second, Jerry Lewis’ The Day The Clown Cried, 1972, has never been seen).
2. – Sandy Dennis, The Fox, 1967. Anne Heywood and her producer husband, Raymond Stross, first envisaged making the steamy DH Lawrence tale in Copenhagen – with the Bergman star. Final version was made in Ontario.
