Director Frank Beyer had a problem: who should be Jacob? His friend and excellent actor Brodský or the bigger star, Rühmann? Needless to say the solution was taken out of his hands. Hoenecker said it had to be Brodský recause Rühmann, heaven forfend, was a West German! Armin Mueller-Stahl, who played Roman Stahm, was Dr Kirschbaum the France-Hungary-US American remake with Robin Williams as Jacob the Liar, directed in 1997 by Peter Kassovitz (father of the French actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz).
