1. - Walter Matthau, The Odd Couple, 1968. Klugman was considered when Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were too expensive a couple - if Billy Wilder was directing. In his first run-in with Paramount, new production chief Robert Evans refused cut-price stars. He cut Billy Wilder, instead! In 1970, Klugman beat Mickey Rooney to the Oscar role for five Paramount TV years - and on stage again in the 90s - with Tony Randall.
