Elena Yakovleva

  1. Radmila Schiogoleva, Dau, Ukraine-Russia-Netherlands-Germany-Sweden, 2013.   The unknown (unhinged?) Russian auteur Ilya Khrzhanovskytook ten 2005 festival prizes for his debutas clout enough torule his third film like Vladimir Putin during five yearsinside what amounted to his own totalitarian society. For the biopic of Lev Landau, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist (and scandalous ladykiller), Khrzhanovsky took over the Ukranian city of Kharkov, pushed the $3.5m budget to $10m, re-built the Russian Science Academy’s Institute for Theoretical Physicson Europe’s largest set (12,000 square metres), ordered cast, crew andvisitors to dress, eat, smoke - live! - as in the Stalin era - the film was even shot by Stalinesque hidden cameras and mikes.  And no actors!  Apart from his leading lady… He  dropped the better known Elena for the more pliable Radmilla and then -  get this, Meryl! -  he first made her work a full year in a chocolate factory. “To beat the actress out of her”! When edited from 700 hours of footage,  Daufinally opened in January, 2019!
