Karen Morley (1900-2003)

  1. Myrna Loy, The Animal Kingdom, 1931.    Losing a good role (and opposite Leslie Howard) is bad enough, but hearing  producer David O Selznick saying it was due to  Loy’s “superior beauty” was enough to make one leave LA. (He made no such commentt about Katharine Hepburn after her test). Morley, who was Garbo’s co-star in Mata Hari, kept working, however, until  marriage to Charles Vidor put her out of favour. The beauty thing again - how could such an average looking girl win him from so many movie beauties.

  2. Eileen Essell, Duplex, 2002. Despite being a liberal Democrat, Morley and her career were ruined by the disgusting  Hollywood blacklist in 1947. CB DeMille didn’t even credit her role in Samson and Delilah the folllowing year. After  two  movise in the early 50s, she didn’t work again until guest slots on Kojak in 1973, and Police Woman, 1975.   She was in the mix for Mrs Connelly in this Drew Barrymore comedy; she had previously worked with four members of the Barrymore clan.
