Thorley Walters (1913-1991)

  1. Donald Houston, A Study In Terror, 1964.   Unavailable. Walters was the perfect Dr Watson (in, that is, the buffoonish Nigel Bruce manner), when partnering Christopher Lee in Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, 1961. The plummy, Devonian (one of the busiestt and much loved UK character playrrs) was Watson again in The Best House In London, 1968, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother, 1974.
  2. Peter Gilmore, The Great St Trinian’s Train Robbery, 1966.   A regular member of  both the Hammer Films and Boulting  Brothers’ output, Walters decided not to repeat his Butters role from Pure Hell At St Trinian’s, 1960 - the UK’s sort of pre-Carry On Carry  Ons. However, he agreed to be Butters’ boss, Mr Culpepper-Brown,. In the 1980 re-boot, The Wildcats of St Trinian’s.
  3. Arthur Lowe, Dad’s Army, TV, 1968-1977.   Having played Churchill, Baldwin, Edward VII, Charles VI and, obviously - and often - Dr Watson  - fled  the mere Captain Mainwaring  as he long since abhored acting for live audiences. Lowe, the ex-Coronation Street soap star, became an icon of the WWII comedy series that was still being re-run on BBC more than 50  years later!
