1. – Barbara Windsor, EastEnders, TV, 1994-2010. Hard to believe that the classic BBC soap debuted in 1985 without its most iconic character, Peggy Mitchell. She arrived as a guest cameo for a three month plotline in 1991. Warne was the third Peggy: the first quit before filming, the second shot eight episodes – all scrapped before being seen. The Cockney Mother Courage was resurrected with the inspired casting of Babs three years later. Warne more closely resembled the mother of the dreaded roughouses Phil and Grant but Babs was the toast of the nation for 16 years, 1,502 episodes of “You’re a Mitchell!”… “It’s all about family!”… and… “Get outa my pub!”
