Katherine Heigl, Bride of Chucky, 1998.   Stiles was chosen for Jade (not the bride) but escaped to be Kate, er Kat, in  10 Things I Hate About You – The Taming of the Shrew Goes To High School.  The favourite in the series for Brad Dourif,who voiced Chucky. Heigl would rise to better things.  Like Gray’s Anatomy,TV, 2005-2010.
  3. Larisa Oleynik, 10 Things I Hate About You, 1999. Tested for one Stratford girl – Bianca – and won another: Kat.  Yes,  all inspired, as the Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert said, “in a sortuva kinduva way, by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew ,in the same sense that Starship Troopers was inspired by Titus Andronicus.’” 
  4. Scarlett Johansson, The Girl With A Pearl Earring, 2003.    In the running (with Samantha Morton) for the titular Griet when the Kate Hudson plans fell apart.
  5. Selma Blair, The Fog, 2004.      First choice for radio dee-jay Stevie was more keen on playing Elizabeth, the hero’s squeeze. Julia finished up playing neither.
  6. Maggie Grace, The Fog, 2004.   She must have re-read the script, a sad sack re-hash of John Carpenter’s 1979 horror hit. Elizabeth was rewritten younger and innocent for Maggie. Didn’t help the movie. Carpenter’s original had a small budget, some imagination and a strong cast, recalled UK critic Philip French. “The new version has a sizable budget, no imagination and a cast of nonentities.”
  7. Jessica Alba, Fantastic Four, 2004.    Stiles was up for Susan Storm, aka Invisible Woman. Elizabeth Banks, Kate Bosworth, Scarlett Johansson, Ali Larter, Rachel  McAdams, Meg Ryan, KaDee Strickland, Renee Zellweger were also lucky to lose this mess – second of four flop versions of the comic. One day, Marvel will doubtless regain all rights and fit the Four into its triumphant Cinematic Universe.
  8. Jessica Biel, Valentine’s Day, 2009.     But not Julia’s days as she lost out in the auditions to Jessica for the 21-star-jammed LA take on Love Actually. Director Garry Marshall struck gold – then re-made it (badly) as New Year’s Eve in New York.
