- Max Irons, The Host, 2012. Young Irons beat Harrington, among others, to become Jared, Saoirse Ronan’s boyfriend in Andrew Niccol’s film of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s sf book.
- Miles Teller, Fantastic Four, 2014. With some time off from being Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, the Londoner tested for the reboot’s Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic. Also seen: Richard Madden, Jack O’Connell, and Anton Yelchin. Teller is the first US Richards. They were all lucky to escape what Hollywood Reporter critic Todd McCarthy called “a 100-minute trailer for a movie that never happens.”
- Charlie Hunnam, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, 2015. On Warner shelves almost as long as Justice League, David Dobkins’ Arthur & Lancelot churned into Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthuras the first of a possible sextet (but there are no Hobbits!). During which time, the guy pulling the sword from the stone was to be Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Dominic Cooper, Jai Courtney. Colin Farrell, Liam Hemsworth, the Scottish Hans Matheson (from Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, 2009), Jim Sturgess or Benjamin Walker. Then, Hunnam promised director Ritchie he’d recover his Sons of Anarchy weight loss and then some. The Dobkins version was axed as too pricey ($130m) for an unknown like Harrington. Unknown? He was being watched by Planet Earth – and beyond – in Game of Thrones!
- Benton Thwaites, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, 2015. The fifth one… Or to put it another way: the worst one. Thirteen years have sailed by since the first and yet the couple played by Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley now have a strapping son, Henry Turner – who was better as a kid (Lewis McGowan) than the winner of the battle between Taron Egerton, Ansel Elgort, Kit Harington, Sam Keeley and George McKay.
