1. – Meryl Streep, Sophie’s Choice, 1982. The titular choice for director and co-scenarist Alan J Pakula came down to the Czech (now Slovak) star of Dark Sun and Cutting It Short, 1980, – and Meryl, who begged to be Sophie Zawistowska on her hands and knees, literally. She learned a Polish accent, how to speak German, she dubbed the French release version… and won her second Oscar. Vásáryová later became the Czech ambassador in Vienna 1990-1992 and a 1999 Slovak Presidential candidate.
