Hollywood’s Silver Fox, director Howard Hawks, chose the New York actress for Kate Hepburn’s mother the year before in Bringing Up Baby but not as the mother of this 1918 war hero Alvin C York. Wycherly was later, more famously, James Cagney’s Ma Jarrett in White Heat, 1949.
