Norman Lloyd

  1. Jack Elam, Rawhide, 1951.     Head Fox Darryl Zanuck said Lloyd was “too Jewish looking” for a villain. Next choice, Everett Sloane, was too rough when manhandling Susan Hayward. Elam was a Tyrone Power discovery, recommended to Fox – and shot by Hayward as he tried to kill Power’s anti-hero. Alfred Hitchcock wasn’t worried by Lloyd’s looks and made him the baddy with the splitting seams, tumbling from the Statue of Liberty in Saboteur, 1942 – and as a producer of the Hitch TV series.
