- Laurence Payne, Doctor Who #25: The Gunfighters, TV, 1966. On the (wanted) lists for Johnny Ringo when Doc1 William Hartnell lands in the Wild West with a toothache and the only medic in Tombstone is… Doc Holliday. Between 1968-1979, the Welshman appeared in four chapters opposite two Doctors. Doc2 Patrick Troughton and Doc4 Tom Baker. Madoc also appeared in the Peter Cushing movie, Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2159 AD, 1965, and two Whoverse radio productions
- Neil McCarthy, Doctor Who #102: The Power of Kroll, TV, 1978-1979. The Welshman was first due to make his third Whoverse visit as Thawn before director Norman Stuart gave it to George Baker – who suddenly opted out. McCarthy took over during Doc4 Tom Baker’s search for The Key To Time. Madoc was then asked to be Fenner when first choice Alan Browning fell ill.
- Derek Jacobi, Cadfael, TV, 1994-1996. Britain’s ITV network wasted so much time dickering about the series that Ian Holm had fled the coop. Madoc, the BBC Radio 4 version of the crusader turned monk turned detective, was almost signed before Jacobi became available for 12th Century Shrewsbury… made in Budapest.
- Robert Ashby, Doctor Who #141: Timelash, TV, 1985. Madoc, Ashby, Paul Jerricho and Carl Rigg were all in the mix for Borad, yet another despot ruler – during Doc6 Colin Baker’s visit to planet Karfel.
- William Gaunt, Doctor Who #142: Revelation of the Daleks, 1985. For the second time, 25 actors were up for a single rôle… in Doctor flaming Who. How preposterous..! An unlikely choice for a mercenary, Gaunt was selected late in the game after an exhausting Orcini search through Madoc, Joss Ackland, Ray Brooks, James Ellis, John Fraser, Peter Gilmore, Denis Lill, Peter Vaughan… Plus survivors of the astonishing army of 203 candidates for just 18 roles in Lifeforce the year before: Tom Adams, George Baker, John Carson, Frank Finlay, Julian Glover, Michael Gothard, Del Henney, Peter Jeffrey, TP McKenna, Patrick Mower, Clifford Rose, Patrick Stewart, Nigel Stock, Anthony Valentine, David Warner and Frank Windsor.
