Donald Falson, Clueless, 1994. Chicago’s Howard tried out for Murray indirector Amy Heckerling’s Beverly Hills flip-side of her Fast Times at Ridgemont High. “A smart and funny movie,” said Chicago critic Roger Ebert, ”and the characters are in on the joke.”

Jeffrey Wright, Lady inthe Water, 2005. A change of Mr Dury… of whom it was said: “Wow! He’s hearing the voice of god from a crossword puzzle!” (It was an M Night Shyamalan film).
- Don Cheadle, Iron Man 2, 2010. “The surprise of a lifetime,” said Howard about losing his role of Colonel James ‘Rhody’ Rhodes, Robert Downey-Iron Man’s best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One Iron Man 1 scene had Howard looking at a silver armour suit, saying: “Next time, baby!” Instead, he was soon saying: “Apparently the contracts that we sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on…” He was the first actor signed for the first film, paid then most and, reportedly, director Jon Favreau did not enjoy the experience. Cheadle was at his daughter’s birthday party when called about becoming Rhodey. “But that could be 12 years we’re talking about,” said Cheadle. And Marvel said: ‘Oh, take two hours.’” He accepted and ran into Howard the next day.“We never had any beef,” he said. They’d known each other for years and co-starred in the 2003 Oscar-winning Crash. Both Howard and Cheadle had co-starred in Collision, ,2004. Howard became a huge TV star in Empire, 2015-2020.
- Tracy Morgan, The Son of No One, 2010. Like Robert De Niro passing his cop to Al Pacino, Howard backed out of being Channing Tatum’s best pal, Vinnie, in as sudden – and weird – pedophile subplot. A surprising (and excellent) drama role for the 30 Rock comic.
- Jamie Foxx, Django Unchained, 2011.

Jeffrey Wright, A Single Shot, 2012. Only Sam Rockwell shone in this misjudged backwoods thriller. Director David M Rosenthal said he was inspired by Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Terrence Malick. Inmaking sure the camera was turned on, perhaps – nothing else.
