Irving Pichel, Jezebel, 1937.    The Warner shooting schedule reported that after playing Huger for a single day, indeed  the first day of shooting, Paton was let go  in favour of  director Irving Pichel.  (Paul Boyer, Rafael Corio, Jan De Briac and George Sorel had tested for the role). . Pichel  acted in 75 films and directed 40 others, including The Bride Wore Boots, Mr Peapody and the Mermaid, Destination Moon, Martin Luther.Warner’s  $1.25m response to MGM’s Gone with the Wind was released on March 26, 1938 – the day I was born.
