1. – Vincent Cassel, L’instinct de mort & Mesrine: L’ennemi public numéro 1, France-Canada-Italy, 2008. From 2001 when Barbet Schroeder was set to direct. Cassel was always first choice for the 1959-79 French Dillinger: bank robber, kidnapper, killer (39 victims, at least), who saw himself, bien sur, as an anarchist, Cassel had certain issues with the script(s) – Mesrine was painted heroic – and withdrew. First, Benoît Magimel, then Elbaz was sought. Ultimately, Cassel returned for the vastly improved scripts, a nine-month/two-movies production. And a César award.
