Jakob Gumpel, Gaslight, 1943. The Russian-born pianist-composer was looking around town for acting work. He was first seen for George Cukor’s take on the Patrick Hamiltion play. Hardly a stretch. The role was listed as: Pianist. But Coates gave in and played exactly that role in Song of Russia and was Himself in Two Girls and a Sailor. End of screen career.
