Arleen Whelan

  1. Nancy Kelly, Jesse James, 1938.     Difficult for any gal to stand out in the testosterone cast (Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda as Jesse and Frank  James, plus Randolph Scott, Brian Donlevy, John Carradine, etc) in this lies, all lies version of the ruthless  killer’s life and times. Even Jesse’s  granddaughter, Jo Frances James, acknowledged that in in Associated Press interview
  2. Jane Wyman, Magic Town, 1946.     Director Wild Bill Wellman borrowed Wyman from Warner after considering Whelan, Janet Blair and Loretta Young (who fell ill)  to counter James Stewart’s new kind of hero –  an opinion pollster, no less. If ever a film needed Frank Capra. (Wellman had directed Blair the previous year in Gallant Journey).
  3. Marilyn Monroe, All About Eve, 1950.
  4. Lita Baron, Jesse James’ Women, 1954.    Whelan and Wanda Hendrix were announced as two of the women of Don Barry and Jack Beutel as Jesse and Frank James. The guys were right, the ladies became Baron and Peggie Castle.  Of the four nominees, Castle won the most gigs, 58 to, say, Baron’s 26.
