Miramax said OK if Neil Jordan used a woman in the transexual role –  ruining the shock finale. Why not, said Harvey Weinstein, Cathy –  your Mona Lisa?  Derek Jarman suggested the male Jaye who agreed, while drunk,  in order to pay for his hand-made leather riding boots. Miramax returned to distribute the film and push it into six Oscars nods, winning Best Original Script for Jordan. When Jaye was taken ill during the shoot, a doctor said: “Have you considered the possibility that she might be pregnant?”
