Clarine Seymour

  1. Mary Hay, Way Down East, 1919.      Something of a jinxed movie… for two of DW Griffith regular actors. Seymour died after intestinal surgery during the production – and following the New York premiere, her intended co-star, Robert Harron (from The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance) appeared to have attempted suicide after losing successive roles to the younger Richard Barthlemes. (No, insisted Lillian Gish, the gun shot was an accident). Barthelmes later wed his substituted co-star, Mary Hay. That union also died. Seven years later.
