Dame May Witty

  1. Gladys Cooper, Now, Voyager, 1942    A tale of two British dowager types…   Producer Hal Wallis  wanted veteran Dame May Witty to be  the mother of Bette Davis in the romantic melodrama.  (The one lighting two cigarettes at once).  Newish  director Irving Rapper refused.  He preferred Cooper.  Wallis said he’d  never heard of her.  He did on the 1943 Oscarnight.
