Freddie Jones

  1. Philip Madoc, Doctor Who #084: Brain of Morbius, TV, 1976.        With Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Vincent Price, Jones was on the wish-list for the evil Frankensteinish Solon on planet Karn. Madoc was a Whoverse regular on screen and radio.
  2. Roland Culver The Missionary, 1982.     Jones  passed on being the doddery  Lord Fermleigh in Michael Palin’s solo debut as writer and star. Culver doddered magnificently. What was almost called The Missionary Position was his final film…  at age 82.
  3. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  4. Michael Gothard, Lifeforce, 1984.
  5. Frank Finlay, Lifeforce, 1984.
  6. Aubrey Morris, Lifeforce, 1984.
  7. John Stratton, Doctor Who #140: The Two Doctors, TV, 1985.      The two   Time Lords were Doc2 Patrick Troughton and Doc 6, the short-lived Colin Baker. Shockeyes were more plentiful. The 22 prospects were: Jones, Stratton, Joss Ackland, George Baker, Ian Bannen, Brian Blessed, Denholm Elliott, James Ellis, Frank Finlay, Ronald Fraser, Michael Gothard, Don Henderson, Donald Houston, Jeremy Kemp, Roy Kinnear, Ronal
  8. Laurence Payne, Doctor Who #140: The Two Doctors, TV, 1985.      Director Peter Moffatt shuffled 16 candidates for the dastardly Dastari, genetically experimenting on the Androgum race. Jones, Joss Ackland, Bernard Archard, George Baker, James Bree, Michael Craig, Peter Cushing, Anton Diffring, Neil Hallett, Bernard Hepton, Peter Jeffrey, Jeremy Kemp, Clifford Rose, Nigel Stock, John Woodnutt.
  9.  James Ellis, Doctor Who #152: Battlefield, 1989.      Also short-listed for Peter Warmsly opposite Doc7 Sylvester McCoy – in the final episode of Nicholas Courtney’s Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart – were Jones, Joss Ackland, George Baker, Geoffrey Bayldon, John Carson, Kenneth Colley, Ronald Lacey and David Warner. But producer John Nathan-Taylor had been determined to land the Irish Ellis throughout his 80s’ tenure and finally got him for his final production. During 211 screen roles 1960-2017, Jones never met The Doctor – just Doctor At Large. Not the same thing. Not at all!
