George Irving

  1. Charles Trowbridge, Sergeant Madden, 1938.    From 1914 to 1955, Irving played 261 screen roles – but not this one.  i As director Josef von Sternberg  moved, as the New York Times put it, from Marlene Dietrich’s classic profile to the lavatic contours of Wallace Beery (as a hackneyed  Irish-American cop), Trowbridge had to be called in to replace  Irving (n some necessary re-shoots. (PS: I went to a school for a year in UK’s Trowbridge!).
