  1. Akshaye Khanna, Di Chahta Hai, India, 2001.      Five actors: one role… Bollywood director Farhan Akhtar had immense difficulties finding his Siddharth, the most serious of a buddy trio. He wrote it for the newly hot Hrithik. When he withdrew, newer hot Abishek Bachchan took over, only to leave, as well. Farhan considered Shiney Ahuja but booked Aamir Khan – only to swop him at the last minute with Khanna, previously set as the fun-loving Akash.
  2. Shah Rukh Khan, Swades: We, the People, India, 2004.      Director Ashutosh Gowarike wanted the sun-hot Hrithik. He was too busy and passed to the 90s’ “King” Khan.
  3. Zayed Khan, Main Hoon Na, India, 2004.      Hrithik played Lucky Lakshman for about a day when his triumph in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, 2000, made him – according to director Farah Khan – far too popular for the role.
  4. Saif Ali Khan, Hum Tum, India, 2004.      Roshan plus Aamir Khan and Vivek Oberoi were also sought for Karan – in the Bollywood version of Harry meeting Sally…
  5. Abhishek Bachchan,  Bunty Aur Babli, India, 2005.      Hrithik and Hrithikmania arrived with the new millennium, in a film directed by his father, Rekash Roshan, in 2000. Now Junor passed on this road movie and  Abhishek  starred – making his name and fame with  hisdirector father, the megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

  7. Shah Rukh Khan, Don, India, 2006.      Roshan was in the frame until auteur Farhan Akhtar finished his Hindi script and realised he’d created a more mature Don.

  10. Jake Gyllenhaal, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, 2009. The Bollywood superstar refused to go Hollywood and become Prince Dastan in hot-shot producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s latest Disney franchise.
