Ryan Reynolds

  1. Nicholas Brendon, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, TV, 1997-2003.      Vancouver’s Reynolds,ex-lover of Alanis Morrissette and Scarlett Johansson, tested for Zander Harris - who survivedthe entire 145 episodes of Joss Whedon’s “high school as a horror movie” in small-town America.
  2. Jake Gyllenhaal,  Accidental Love,  2008.  Lucky to lose the role of Howard Birdwell as the David O Russell film suffered boycotts by actors and crew when the budget ran dry. After shooting “finished” in November, it  was shelved until a February  2015 release when Russell’s credit had turned into Stephen Greene.
  3. Sharlto Copley, The A Team, 2009.      Reynolds and Woody Harrelson were considered for Captain “Howling Mad” Murdock. Then, director Joe Caranahan saw Neil Blomkamp’s surprise South African winner, District 9, 2009 and fell for Copley playing a the hero, described by Chicago critic Roger Ebert,  as not “the brightest bulb on the tree.”
  4. Christophe Waltz, Big Eyes, 2013.    Twenty years after Ed Wood, Tim Burton tackles a second biopic - of 1950s’ painter Margaret Keane’s highs and lows (such as hubby claiming credit for her ‘60s work).  Amd wanted actors  he had not previously worked with.  Burton’s first couple, Kate Hudson and Thomas Haden Church, became Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds and, ultimately, Amy Adams and Waltz.
  5. Harrison Ford, Blade Runner, 1981.   According to Runner expert Paul Sammon, the  UK wiz Ridley Scott spent a long time sniffing out the perfect Deckard.  From  top-notchers like Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman (keen… on making it a totally different character, of course),  Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino…  to such  excellent journeymen as William Devane, Robert Duvall, Peter Falk, Frederic Forrest, Scott Glenn,  Tommy Lee Jones, Raul Julia, Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken.  During desperation time, choices slipped to Cliff Gorman, Judd Hirsch - plus Arnold Schwarzenegger, not yet seen as Conan let alone Terminator.  And close to  the last time in such an illustrious list,  the fading star of Reynolds.
  6. Ezra Miller,  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2015.
