He  was  into his own concentration camp black-comedy, La vita e bella/Life Is Beautiful. Benigni is only the second actor (after Olivier!) to direct himself to an Oscar (the first Best Actor Oscar for a foreign language film) and the sixth to direct himself a Razzie for Worst Actor - in 2003 for  his horrendous Pinocchio.
