- Hugh Grant, Maurice, 1987. Julian Sands, from US director James Ivory's previous film, A Room With A View, was delayed on Siesta, so Wilby became Maurice Hall - and Grant took on Wilby’s previous part of Clive Durham. Next stop, the 1987 Venice festival - and sharing the Best Actor prize.
- Sam West, Howard's End, 1992. Too old for Leonard Bast in another Merchant-Ivory offering - Indian producer Ismail Merchant and US director James Ivory. So Wilby became Anthony Hopkins' "sanctimonious" son.
