Bert Lahr (1895-1967)

  1. Hugh Herbert, One Touch of Venus, 1947.       Hollywood icon Mary Pickford snapped up the musical’s rights - for Broadway icon, Mary Martin, with Bert Lahr, Frank Sinatra and Clifton Webb. Then, Martin fell pregnant and Pickford sold it, even more rapidly, to MGM... which saw it as a vehicle for Ava Gardner. Herbert (a veritable Lahr clone) was totally absent in the final cut.
  2. James Flavin, One Touch Of Venus, 1948.     Mary Pickford jumped fast  in 1943 to buy the $150,000 rights to the  Broadway hit -  for Mary Martin, Clifton Webb, Sinatra and Oz’s Cowardly Lion  Then, she got cold feet and sold it, even more rapidly, to MGM... which saw it as  a vehicle for Ava Gardner.
