James Daly

  1. Robert Ellenstein, Illegal, 1954.   Actor Tim Daly’s actor father (84 screen roles in 39 years) fell out of being reporter Joe Knight. Not that anyone noticed. Far too busy clocking the debut of the statuesque Jayne Mansfield. Even if her two songs were cut.
  2. Brooks West, Anatomy of a Murder, 1958.    Producer-director-ogre Otto Preminger (too) quickly chose James Daly as substitute for Pat Hingle, terribly injured in  lift shaft accident. (Worse, it also cost him, Burt Lancaster’s  Oscar-wining Elmer Gantry role). Daly, however, had a Broadway gig. What to do, what to do? Hey. why not West! He was handy, after all…  on the Michigan  location with his wife, Eve Arden, who was playing James Stewart’s faithful secretary, Della Street…  er, Maida Rutledge.
