James Wilby

  1.  Hugh Grant, Maurice, 1987.     Julian Sands, from US director James Ivory’s previous film, A Room With A View, was delayed on Siesta, so Wilby became Maurice Hall – and Grant took on Wilby’s previous part of Clive Durham. Next stop, the 1987 Venice festival – and sharing the Best Actor prize.
  2. Sam West, Howard’s End, 1992.     Too old for Leonard Bast in another Merchant-Ivory offering –   Indian producer Ismail Merchant and US director James Ivory.   So Wilby became Anthony Hopkins’ “sanctimonious” son.
