  1. Judy Knaiz, Hello, Dolly! 1968.   A  boomer in the of Ethel Merman tradition, JAW tested for the role of Gussie Grainger/Ernestina Simple. TV’s Laugh star had been Carol Channing’s stand-in during the Broadway production and played Dolly, herself, in a 1973 West Coast production.  Her voice was developed as a child trying to be heard  above eight siblings. “I have a big mouth. When I was young, I only mouthed the hymns, so I wouldn’t drown everyone else out. I have my quiet moments. But I don’t have many.”
