- Paula Prentiss, The Stepford Wives, 1975. “I shot for a week with Joanna,” recalled UK writer-director Bryan Forbes, “but [producer] Edger Scherick didn’t like her and fired her. Joanna is a very fine actress who has gone on to do some very good things, but I didn’t have the last word. It was Scherick’s decision to re-cast.”
- Jill Clayburgh, Gable and Lombard, 1976. Canadian director Sidney J Furie tested more potential Lombards than Gables. None held a candle to Lombard’s flame.
- Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman, TV, 1976-1979. Joanna beat 200 applicants for the role, yet director Jack Arnold refused to consider the series without Miss World USA 1972. So no chance for the previous, 1973 WW tele-film star, Cathy Lee Crosby, Angie Bowie (David’s first wife), and all three Charlie’s Angels: Farrah Fawcett. Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith. Carter was soon on $1m a year while Debra Winger, at 20, refused her own spin-off series as was her sister, Wonder Girl. Joanna showed she had the right Diana Prince stuff as Zhora in Blade Runner, 1982.
- Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek: Voyager, TV, 1995-2001.
