John Howard Davies

  1. Bobby Driscoll, Treasure Island, 1949.     Walt Disney’s original idea was to reunite David Lean’s Oliver Twist couple of young Davies and Robert Newton. He lost Davies (a future BBC-tv director) but Newton became, of course, the iconic pirate – Arrrgh! – Long John Silver.  The Oscar-winning kid, Driscoll, also played Disney’s Peter Pan in one of the earliest Hollywood examples of performance-capture – his acting was filmed, then rotoscoped. Acne ruined his career, Disney dropped him and he was buried in 1968 as a John Doe in a mass grave in New York’s Potter’s Field until fingerprints identified him.
