- James Wilby, Maurice, 1987. “Siesta was running over time in Spain and there was a mess of scheduling,” said the find of US director James Ivory’s previous film, A Room With A View. “I didn’t like the character anyway.” Wilby had previoiusly been seen for a support role, but dropped by Ivory and his legendary partner, producer Ismail Merchant, because his tall blondness made him look like a Sands II. Result: Wilby (and Hugh Grant in Wilby’s original role) won the acting prize at the 1987 Venice festival.
