Lea Padovani

  1. Suzanne Cloutier, Othello, 1949.    Orson Welles’ first Desdemona when shooting began in Venice. Welles loved the Italian diva as much as The Moor loved Desdemona. The camera did not. Too dark, plus an indecipherable English. Anyway, producer Montatori Scalera was expecting Verdi, not Shakespeare. End of financing!  For three years. Welles turned to the  French Cecile Aubry and then persuaded Canada’s Cloutier (Mrs Peter Ustinov during 1954-1971) to join his truncated script, down from Shakespeare’s three-hours to…  90 minutes.
