  1. Peggy Ann Garner, Junior Miss, 1944.         Mary Pickford, no less, paid $350,000 in 1942 for the rights to the play based on Sally Benson’s New Yorker tales – for Temple. No? OK, for a movie series with one of the unknowns in the Broadway run. For example, Lonergan, New York’s Fluffy, was tested in November 1943. Pickford pulled out when, allegedly, the two playwrights, wanted too high a percentage deal. Warner Bros rushed in – and out. Fox made the movie with Garner as Judy, the teenage cupid.
