Marilyn Horne, Carmen Jones, 1954. The celebrated opera star soprano was first booked by director Otto Preminger to sing his lover Dorothy Dandridge’s arias. Although he was a singer as well as Dandridge, Harry Belafonte was dubbed by LeVern Hutcherson. Price fell ill, and was replaced by Catherine Hilgenberg, who quit over Preminger’s stupid bullying, and 19-year-old Horne recorded everything for… $300.
