MacDonald Carey

  1. Walter Abel, Holiday Inn, 1941.   According to the Paramount Collection at the AMPAS Library, “Donald Carey”  (in his younger days, he resembled Gary Cooper) and Richard Denning tested for Danny Reed until Paramount ordered an older (looking) player.
  2. Gary Cooper, From  Whom The Bell Tolls, 1942.     Told you he looked like Coop…  Rejected in good company: Clark Gable, Tyrone Power, even Robert Donat.
  3. Barry Sullivan, Lady in the Dark, 1943.   For once, a Broadway star was invited to reprise his stage role (of Dr Brooks). Thanks – but I’m off to WWII. Far, far away from what the LA Examiner called a happy, happy mingling of Freud and Walt Disney.
  4. Kevin McCarthy, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956.    “They’re here already! You’re next! You’re next, You’re next…”
