  1. Agnes Moorehead, Show Boat, 1950.  Booked for Parthy Hawks, Barrymore had to back out due to a crowded diary. Natwick was considered before Moorehead was signed.  
  2. Ruth Gordon, Harold and Maude, 1971. There were obviously quite a few possible Harolds, but surely Ruth was the only possible Maude – even if shecouldn’t drive a car.Not quite.
