Romney Brent, Under The Red Robe, 1936.   As it was shot at UK’s Denham Studios, the local comic star was first sought for  Marius, ever-faithful sidekick of our hero – the feared duellist known as The Black Death, saved from a death sentence by Cardinal Richelieu to quell a rebellious Huguenot duke, yadda, yadda, yadda. Brent was a Mexican who wound up as Padre Felipe in the Zorro TV series. The Italian-born Banks had moved from Hollywood to London in the 20s. He directed four 30s comedies with the hugely popular singer Grace Fields and married her in 1940 until his death
